Conducting Academy
In a state first, mini´«Ã½ in partnership with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, is offering our Senior School students the chance to participate in a Conducting Academy. While quite common overseas, such an initiative is relatively unheard of in Australia and provides students a pathway to future success in music careers by teaching the basics and nuances of orchestral conducting, building an understanding of communicating musical interpretation and experience the learning process as player as well as a conductor.
The sessions are spread out throughout the year and led by Australian Conducting Academy alumni Will Newbery who also is a violist with the TSO. Under his guidance, the students are benefiting from this opportunity. Recently, the students met with the TSO’s chief conductor and driving force behind this program, Eivind Aadland, to continue their journey as conductors. His generosity of time with the students was phenomenal and we look forward to catching up with him again later in the year. The students will continue to work closely with Will throughout the year culminating in a final concert in Term 4.
Many thanks to Will, Eivind and the TSO’s educational officers, Kim Waldock and Jack Machin, for all their support.
