Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education contributes to an inspirational education by promoting relationships, resilience and reflection; awakening a spirit of adventure and developing a relationship with nature; and providing challenges to foster personal growth.

The Outdoor Education experience starts in Year 2 with an orientation day to our camp facility at Southport. Outdoor Education experiences are continued through Junior School with annual multi-night camps.

Middle School students undertake a more demanding series of adventure camps in preparation for Year 9. Year 7 camps occur at the start of each year at Southport and Year 8 camps to Freycinet National Park towards the middle of the year.

We work very closely with the Power of 9 team on the expedition component of our Power of 9 programs. In 2016, students will undertake a sailing and bush walking expedition to Port Davey, a Global Challenge to Fiji, a cultural trip to Central Australia and an Island Challenge on a select number of Tasmania’s many islands.

Opportunities are available for more challenging activities and expeditions for students in Senior School, including senior secondary courses in Outdoor Education and Outdoor Leadership. Some of the activities in which students participate include; bush walking, cave exploration, surfing, sea kayaking, SCUBA diving, mountain biking, rock climbing, abseiling, snow camping and navigation.

We hold an annual skiing/snowboarding trip for both Middle School and Senior School students and in the past we have visited Mt Hotham (Vic), Perisher (NSW) and Queenstown (NZ). We also offer a Senior School adventure and community service overseas trip that in the past has included Borneo and India.

During our adventures students visit several areas around Tasmania, including Freycinet, Tasman, Mt Field, Cradle Mountain and Maria Island National Parks, as well as Bruny Island, kunanyi/Mount Wellington and the School’s own Outdoor Education campus at Southport; approximately 100km south of Hobart, the Stephen Hay Memorial Park is on the edge of the World Heritage South West Wilderness region.
